The Fediverse is a centralized group of supposedly decentralized open-source social media clones that have banded together because individually they are weak, but together they can overthrow the oppressors. Wait, that doesn’t sound quite right…
The Fediverse’s origins date back to GNU Social,A) which attempted to overthrow Twitter and failed so miserably it inspired a revolution which is going to happen any day now.
As I not-so-subtly alluded to, the Fediverse is quite literally just a collection of social media clones who do it worse and expect to get credit for copying other people’s work. They’re designed by people who have no idea why the big social media websites are popular, thinking instead that it must be some kind of grand conspiracy. Then they chose the dumbest possible approach for fighting the centralized social media (federation).
Actually, in a way the situation is much worse. Their issue with social media isn’t that it’s controlled by tyrants…it’s that they aren’t the tyrants. This also helps perfectly explain their actions in their own instances and also why they never make anything actually good: they think that the actual user-facing stuff is perfect, basically, the only problem is the fact they aren’t in charge.
