Halo

Halo is a Western game franchise about a supersoldier who single-handedly beats up a highly religious and genocidal alien alliance. Also, there are weird floating rings that can kill everything.

Review

In General

Halo has a very pleasing aesthetic to me, though I can’t easily articulate exactly what it is about Halo that I find so nice. Though this applies up to Halo Reach and doesn’t really apply past it that much (with notable exceptions like Halo Legends).

I know the comparison will be strange, but I think it gives me a similar feeling to Tolkien's Legendarium. That might just be because I’m thinking about the Legendarium a lot though.

Halo: Combat Evolved

I played the PC version specifically to play the campaign and, after finishing it once, I think I finished it at least one other time. Though never on the hardest difficulties.

Gameplay is pretty good in all the Halo games, so I won’t comment much on that front.

The story at this point in time is alright. I don’t remember any particular issues with the story. Maybe the big one (though this isn’t the fault of this game) is that Sgt. Johnson survives past this game, somehow.

Halo 3: ODST

This is among the few games where I actually finished the campaign. And it was pretty good.

What I especially liked about ODST is that you’re quite fragile, which means you’ve gotta think about how to approach situations (at least a little bit).

Halo Reach

This is the other game that I actually played the campaign for. And the campaign I quite like.

I prefer playing this game the most out of all of them due to the presence of firefight (1) and because of sprint being an ability (2).

I also think that this is where the Halo aesthetic looks best. It still looks like Halo, just with a bit more detail. And not quite as cartoony as the other games. Honestly, I think the franchise should return to the look of this game.

Halo Legends

Before I ever played the games…I ended up watching this. And multiple times too, so you can tell I quite like it.

This can technically be considered the first anime I ever watched too, though I actually think Pokemon holds that title.

Halo Legends is an anthology series and, as a result, each ‘episode’ differs quite a bit. I think my favorite is Homecoming, though Origins Parts 1 & 2 are probably the best (and they’re my second-favorite). Homecoming actually has a few lore issues, though all the ‘episodes’ seem to have problems in that department.
