Transliterations of Names

This article lists a bunch of names which are transliterated or transcribed into scripts of my choosing. This is a counter-part to the Translations of Names article.

P means that I am re-writing the name according to its pronunciation – so I’m transcribing it.

S means that I’m re-writing the name according to its spelling – so I’m basically transliterating it.

If neither is listed, that means that both conditions are technically satisfied, so you can’t say that it’s one over the other (see for example Adelina).

Translation is the act of converting something from one language to another, while transliteration is the rewriting of something in another language/script.
Using ‘sky’ as an example, a Japanese translation would be '空(そら)’, while a transliteration would be スカイ - sukai.

Transliteration and transcription are almost the same thing, but not quite.

Transliteration is when you convert something from one script to another while preserving spelling. Transcription is when you try to preserve the pronunciation as best as possible.

• For a quick and easy way of transliterating English to Katakana, use this converter by the sljfaq.
• I’ve (perhaps temporarily or not) added ateji transcriptions of the various transliterations, as a little bonus. I’m using the sljfaq converter for that.
  • Note 1 on Ateji: I base the meanings off of the meanings of the individual Kanji characters, which I then try to ‘convert’ into something that makes sense.
  • Note 2 on Ateji: These are really more for fun than anything else. If, for whatever reason, you want to actually use Kanji with original pronunciations, I would recommend just using the translated kanji, and then assigning it the original pronunciation. Ex.: 百合(リリ)(Riri).
• The transliterations were originally also listed on the Translations of Names article, but I eventually decided to separate them. This is to make my life easier as it’s easier to edit/add on to the articles like this. It may also make the life of you – the reader – easier.
• I added a few more names since they’re easier to do than the translations. For now, I’ll leave the Ateji out.
