-Anyway, what //is// the Bicameral Mind? The Bicameral Mind concept is basically that before humans were conscious, they basically worked in a ‘split’ manner. The right brain would provide orders to the right brain (via auditory and visual hallucinations, though mainly auditory ones), which the left brain would then follow absolutely. The way this works in practice is that when a person feels stress, a voice appears which tells them what to do. Then they know what to do the next time it happens.+Anyway, what //is// the Bicameral Mind?

-Yeah, that sounds like schizophrenia. Though my understanding (after reading about it for a while) is more like schizophrenia accidentally unlocks something that was always there.+The concept suggests that before consciousness developed in humans, their minds were ‘split’. The right brain would provide orders to the left brain, which the left brain would then follow absolutely. The orders were delivered via auditory and visual hallucinations, through a connection between the respective language centers of both brains.

+In practice, this means that when a person feels stressed, they'll hear a voice which tells them what to do. After doing what the voice told them, they'd typically have resolved whatever situation gave them stress. And the next time they had to deal with the same situation, they'd know what to do.

This is because Schizophrenics also tend to connect a bunch of unrelated things together, which Bicameral people didn't really do. Bicameral people really only heard the hallucinations.))

Jaynes goes further and claimed (and I largely believe him) that the [[lb:Bronze Age]] civilizations were not conscious and a majority of their population was ‘Bicameral’. I plan to go into more detail later, but it does go a bit further. Jaynes goes further and claimed (and I largely believe him) that the [[lb:Bronze Age]] civilizations were not conscious and a majority of their population was ‘Bicameral’.
