+<cite>Cowboy Bebop</cite> has a strong start...then it trips a bit and goes into straight-up ‘weird’ territory for a few episodes before eventually picking up again and ending on a banger. The animation is top-notch for the whole thing though.

The reason being that the manga was created before the anime came out, but based on it...and, well, there isn't a lot of material to work with if you're making something for something that doesn't yet exist.
