Though with how the self-driving system actually works, it's unlikely to have been implemented gradually, and had to have been implemented 'suddenly'.

+The depiction of self-driving cars in this series is interesting...because it's arguably the most accurate prediction of what a world of self-driving cars might look like.
+Why? Because they're all connected into a centralized system which manages where and how the cars drive. Plus each car has its own sensors built-in just in case the system fails to pick something up somewhere.\\
+On top of that, we only ever see this operating within cities. Cities are a very controllable environment, which makes it more likely for self-driving cars to exist here.
