Context-Dependent Writing Rules
This term refers to writing/storytelling rules that are oft-repeatedâŚbut which are dependent on context that isnât included with them. The lack of context results in them being misinterpreted or misunderstood.
The most common example of this is âshow, donât tellâ which is often taken literally in visual mediums like Films or Anime.
Basically, these ârulesâ only make sense in a given context which is left out and unless you understand the deeper mechanics of storytelling, you wonât understand when and why those rules actually apply. Itâs an issue of Storytelling Convention leaving out the important details.
