The Beach Generation
In this video The Gaming Brit points out how the 6th Console Generation seemed to be filled with a lot of Beach-themed games. And that, in general, the Beach/Summer theme permeated it.
Going along with this conspiracy theory, I decided to create this article to list a few examples…
And I realized at some point that this was granted a name by Generation Z: ‘Frutiger Aero’. I personally think that term is stupid,A) but you can add anything identified as such to the list.
Hardware
- Apple Macintosh
- Apple PowerMac G3
- While it came out in 1997 – before the start of the Sixth Generation – its lifespan was until 1999.
- The blue coloring fits into the general theme.
- Aqua
- The user-interface of the Macintosh.
- GameCube
- The GameCube’s development name was ‘Dolphin’.
- PlayStation 2
- An example from TheGamingBrit. The background sounds in the main menu are the sea.
Software
- Crazy Taxi
- Has that ‘vibe’.
- Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball
- It’s in the name.
- Far Cry
- Far Cry takes place on a tropical island.
- Final Fantasy X
- Has a beach on the cover and is generally beach-themed. GamingBrit example.
- The Silent Cartographer level takes place on a beach. GamingBrit example.
- The beginning of the game is on a beach. The game has a tropical theme in general.
- Kingdom Hearts
- The first game starts on a beach.
- The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker
- The game is about sailing from island to island. GamingBrit example.
- Metal Gear Solid 2
- While there’s no beach present, the game takes place on a rig in the ocean. GamingBrit example.
- Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire
- They take place on tropical islands with many beach locations.
- Ratchet and Clank
- I think this was a TheGamingBrit example.
- Seaman
- Water-themed.
- Sonic Adventure
- I don’t remember why I put this here.
- Super Mario Sunshine
- The game takes place on a tropical island. GamingBrit example.
Other
- The Beach
- This is a bizarre film that exemplifies the beach aesthetic almost perfectly. Though it’s also a pretty bad film, maybe? It’s hard to judge because it’s so weird.
A)
I think that it’s an example of Gen Z’s tendency to over-categorize. I get it, I like it too (over-categorization and the things labeled as ‘Frutiger Aero’) but come on. Honestly, though, CARI and the Aesthetics wiki are much worse.
