Damsel in Distress
The âDamsel in Distressâ is a trope where the protagonist is presented with a situation in which another character (or plot device) needs to be rescued.
Elaboration
The Damsel in Distress trope is incredibly versatile, as youâll see, as any character (regardless of gender) can become a âdamselâ in any kind of story.
Now, this trope has a negative connotationâŠan unfair negative connotation. Notice that this trope doesnât really imply much of anything besides one character needing to be rescued by another.
Of course, the Damsel in Distress trope is treated as âsexistâ due to the fact the âdamselâ is female most of the time. But if we step back and think about thisâŠwhy is it bad to portray a woman in trouble needing to be rescued? There are all kinds of rationalizations given for this, but Iâd ignore most of them because we all know itâs just SocJus.
Though it could be argued to be a ClichĂ©, in which case the conversation is a bit different. This is also something I could agree with, though itâs difficult to say with certainty due to how clichĂ© is defined.
