The Digital Versatile Disc or DVD is one of, if not the, most successful physical video formats and it remains the strongest physical video format.
DVDs were developed by a consortium of manufacturers as a compromise to prevent a format war. They spread quickly, likely being the format adopted the fastest, mostly due to the PlayStation 2.
DVDs remain strong even today and continue to be sold and rented, despite the advent of streaming.
