Manga
The manga is a fairly simple episodic slice-of-life. It’s cute and entertaining, though I feel as though it was cut short. The ending was set up over the course of 1 chapter and then executed within an additional chapter. So it feels very abrupt.
I don’t think it was canceled, though that’s how it feels.
Now, while I found it cute and entertaining…I think that I do see how it could have been cut short. The manga was very meandering and not much actually happened. That may sound silly for a slice-of-lifeA) but stuff does still happen in slice-of-life stories.
I think maybe part of the premise is flawed because it’s called Gal & Dinosaur, but there wasn’t actually that big of a focus on gyaru-like things.
Anime
The anime is how I found this series and it’s extremely bizarre.
Each episode is split into a few parts and generally into two parts. The first part is a pretty faithful adaptation of the manga (usually adapting two chapters at once). The second part…is a live-action spin-off/adaptation which more often than not goes completely off-the-rails.
I’m not sure what compelled them to do this. On the one hand I admire the commitment and on the other I think it actually makes the anime worse. I think if they stuck to a faithful adaptation the show would be better.
However, the live action segments are incoherent. They’re entertaining at times, but when taken collectively they’re just absurd in a bad way.
Besides the adaptation and the live action segments, there are a few extra segments. The most notable of these is Kyouryuu Channel which are a few 3D shorts. I think these are all very good.
