Power Rangers
Power Rangers is a really weird Western franchise adapted from a Japanese franchise.
Like almost everyone, I started by watching it as a child. I can’t really remember which season I started with, but it was probably S.P.D., Dino Thunder or Ninja Storm.

No reviews yet because while I usually write reviews with a bad memory, my memory here is especially bad.
Speculah & Analysis
Meta: Really Damn Weird
If Power Rangers didn’t exist, a concept like it would have probably never been a thing.
The idea was to take an existing TV Show (Super Sentai) with all of its scenes pre-filmed…then take out all the Japanese acting and replace it with new American (New Zealand) footage and dubbing. Then the story would be re-written to be more American™. This way, you keep costs down (because you aren’t filming any of the fight scenes) while advertising toys.
The genius who came up with this was Hans Saban and only the gods know how he managed to convince the Japanese to let him borrow the footage.
It’s entirely possible I’m making a big deal out of something that, realistically, is just dubbing taken to its extreme, but it’s still a really weird idea.
Somehow though, this worked.
For most of its existence, Power Rangers’ biggest advantage was cost. It was cheap to make and consistently made cheaper. There were several times when it faced cancellation, which forced them to find ways to cut costs (or do the opposite, like In Space). Though I imagine that at this point in time, Power Rangers is un-cancelable.
90s Show
For some barely explicable reason, most people in pop culture assume that Power Rangers was just a 90s thing that ended in the 90s…despite it continuing basically non-stop from Mighty Morphin’ all the way until today-ish. Case in point.
My guess is that most people just think of Power Rangers as Might Morphin’ Power Rangers, rather than Power Rangers.
