Shinto is the native faith of Japan.

Like all East-Asian religions, it’s difficult to tell the difference between religion, philosophy, way-of-life, etc.

One particular annoyance of mine is when somebody will proudly present the wikipedia description of Shinto, or Confucianism, and such, and use it as proof that the matter of what Shinto is, is settled.

Shinto had syncretized with Buddhism to such an extent that it’s difficult for non-experts (and non-enthusiasts) to tell the difference between Buddhism and Shinto, even within Japan.
There are even some who believe Shinto didn’t exist before Buddhism came to Japan (a ridiculous idea of course).
