Super Gals!

(ちょう)GALS!(Super Gals!) also known as (ちょう)GALS! 寿(ことぶき)(らん)A) is a manga and anime series about Kotobuki Ran – a shiro-Gyaru and the de-facto Queen of Shibuya – living her day-to-day life filled with chaos and fun.

Reviews

So far I’ve only watched the anime, but I plan to read the manga at some point in the near future.

Anime

I ended up watching the whole anime in a relatively short amount of time because I was having so much fun.

However, I can’t comment that much on the story since I watched it raw in Japanese, so I didn’t always get the nuance or details of what was going on (still being in the process of learning Japanese). That said, it was able to maintain my attention and I could still understand what was up.

All that said, I do think the series suffers from one thing in particular, which is that sometimes very ridiculous and downright impossible things happen. It leans a bit more cartoony at times, which makes it hard to be super immersed. I consider this a bit of a downside because – unlike with something like Totally Spies – it’s hard to tell what is or isn’t real in some cases.B)
I think there could be a way to do it properly, but it didn’t really handle the balance between cartoony/immersive/serious very well at times.

Overall I think it’s a really good series though. There’s a lot of content and a lot of fun stuff happens in there. Plus it does get serious at times, though how well that lands I can’t really say…those were coincidentally the parts that I understood the least.

I also think that Kotobuki Ran is a very very fun character. One of the other characters (Asou Yuuya) describes her as a ‘dream girl’ and I think that’s a very apt description, at least for someone like me. She’s also incredibly stylish, so she’s usually wearing some pretty nice-looking outfits.
The fashion and variety in the outfits here is actually really nice in general.

A) In English it’s also called ‘Super Gals! Kotobuki Ran’.
B) To elaborate on what I mean exactly, there’s this footnote.
Basically, I interpret ‘cartoony’ things as being an exaggeration of something that really happens for the purposes of entertainment. So, for example, when someone gets punched into the sky and there’s a star shine after they become invisible…it can be assumed that they aren’t literally exiting the atmosphere…it’s just for the sake of emphasis/comedy at that point. Especially if they reappear just a few seconds later.
However, there are a few cases where this doesn’t really happen (anything to do with Mamirin‘s wealth and technology for example). The effect is that it’s a little harder to take things seriously, especially when it gets a bit more angsty and serious.
