This is an old revision of the document!
PROMARE
プロメア(PROMARE) is an Anime film about a firefighter who ends up uncovering a conspiracy by accident where he learns the world is going to blow up in a glorious volcanic inferno. Following this, he’s arrested and then forced to join forces with a pyromaniac terrorist fire fetishist to save the world.
Review
I’ll fill this in properly much later, but the gist of it is that I think the film is almost perfect in construction. It all fits together, the pacing is great, the animation and art direction is fantastic…so what’s the issue?
The Burnish are the issue!
Basically, the film tries to make us sympathize with them…except that there’s one thing that it manages to overlook. At the very beginning of the movie (where it establishes the backstory) we learn that the Burnish essentially blew up a big chunk of the planet. And they did so willingly. While worshiping fire.
Sure, you could argue that a lot of it was accidental or unintentional, but there is literally a scene of a bunch of them gathered in a circle making a volcano erupt. At that point everything in the film is kinda tainted by the fact the Burnish (many of whom were alive during the destruction of the world) were complicit in many cases.
Is it applicable to all of them? No, of course not, but the film tries to make it seem like the anti-Burnish position is entirely irrational…when the opposite is actually the case. Even putting aside the fact the Burnish are not all complicit, they are all capable of randomly and accidentally exploding in flame. That makes them an actual real danger to everyone else.
The Burnish themselves should understand this, because…again…a lot of them must have lived thru the initial end of the world that they caused. But the story’s presentation suggests that they are not at all aware of this.
Another minor problem has to do with the titles that often appear. They often appear for a few frames and then disappear, which makes it hard to read them in that time. Whether it’s intentional or not doesn’t really matter, because this is just kinda annoying.
